Sustainability

Preserving marine habitats for future generations, as well as ensuring reliable supply to GC Rieber VivoMegas customers is a top priority.

As a member of GOED ( the Global Organisation for EPA and DHA Omega-3), GC Rieber VivoMega has made a commitment to source fish oils exclusively from oceans managed by international and government agencies that enforce meticulous quality assurance and sustainability programs.

Criteria for Sustainable Fisheries certification include:

  • Target stock managed by quota to avoid exploitation
  • Fishery to generate maximum 8% discard waste
  • No by-catch of endangered species (www.iucnredlist.org)
  • No impact to the seabed
  • Social accountability
  • Gradual reduction of carbon footprint

Consequently, VivoMega is only produced from Non-GMO, wild, short-lived sardines and anchovies. We only source from certified fisheries and comply with Friend of the Sea (FoS) and Marine Trust.

Since GC Rieber’s founding 140 years ago, one of the guiding principles has been:

Natural resources should be passed on to future generations in at least as good shape as they were in when we took over.

In 2010 GC Rieber joined the UN Global Compact initiative. The UN Global Compact has established universal guidelines that encourage and demonstrate how businesses should take into account the following principles:

  • Labour rights
  • Human rights
  • Protection of the environment
  • Anti-corruption

Human rights and decent working conditions

Information on how the GC Rieber Group works with human rights and decent working conditions, the Group’s compliance with the Norwegian Transparency Act, and the GC Rieber Group account of due diligence is published on the GC Rieber Group website.

Traceability

All VivoMega omega-3 concentrates are certified for human consumption, adhering to EU directive (EC) No. 853/2004.

From the initial catch to the finished product, VivoMega offers full transparency and traceability. GC Rieber VivoMega has developed an internal process which allows for traceability throughout the entire value chain. We believe that this is more important than ever before and is an ongoing testament to the quality of our products.

Eco-Friendly Production

Rather than catching fish for our exclusive use, VivoMega’s starting material is a by-product of the fish meal industry.

Producing our fish oil concentrates in this manner, minimizes waste and eliminates the impact on the environment. Our processing technology also allows us to minimize unwanted waste material. Taking it a step further, we use the bio-fuel created from our fish oil concentrate production, reducing the need for external energy sources. The remaining bio-fuel and fertilizer by-products are used by local aquaculture and food production industries. This entire process, combined with our day-to-day environmental initiatives, allow us to dramatically minimize our eco-footprint.

Supply & Capacity

In addition to producing great fish oil concentrates, we strive to ensure our partners have the product they want, when they need it.

GC Rieber VivoMega has the world’s largest fish oil storage facility with over 24,000 metric tonnes of capacity, providing us with a significant purchasing advantage, as well as the flexibility to meet our customers’ ongoing supply needs. This investment is part of VivoMega’s continual commitment to producing industry leading Omega-3 concentrates. Our storage capacity also allows us to consolidate orders, minimizing the environmental impact of numerous small shipments.
